Charlie Albert Conerly, Jr. was a University of Mississippi Alum and Ole Miss Rebels quarterback from Clarksdale, Mississippi. Conerly would go on to play with the New York Giants in the National Football League from 1948 to 1961. In 1966, Charlie Conerly was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Conerly was also inducted into the Ole Miss Athletic Hall of Fame in 1987 and the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 1966.
At Ole Miss, Charlie Conerly took some time off while he served as a Marine during World War II where he fought in the Battle of Guam for four years. Upon returning to college, Conerly led his fellow Rebels football team to their first Southeastern Conference championship in 1947. Charlie Conerly is considered one of the greatest players in Ole Miss history and has been honored with numerous awards, including Player of the Year by the Helms Athletic Foundation, consensus All-America and two-time All SEC performer.
After setting multiple Ole Miss records, Conerly was drafted into the NFL in 1945. During his 20 years in the NFL as a quarterback with the New York Giants, Conerly racked up many accomplishments including the 1959 NFL’s MVP award.
